How To Plan A Better Social Media Feed

There’s one thing we always recommend for a better social media feed: Planning. If you take the time to plan out your social media content in advance, you’ll immediately notice a positive difference on your feed. As an experienced social media management agency and the first wedding PR marketing firm, we're sharing 3 tips on how to plan a better Instagram feed, starting today.

Define Your Aesthetic

The first step in planning a better Instagram feed is to define your overall aesthetic. There are a few things to consider when developing your feed guide. The first is color palette. Do most of your brand images fit within a certain color scheme? If so, lean in and adopt a cohesive color palette for all of your posts moving forward. For example, one of our wedding planner social media clients sticks to a palette of blue, pink, and white for all of her social media posts.

If your content spans a variety of color palettes and styles, try grouping content together so that your feed flows nicely from one color palette or mood to the next. For example, share 9 posts in a row that have more pink elements, and then switch to yellow or orange. You don’t have to color-block perfectly - It’s more about making sure your feed flows as people scroll down your page!

Need help determining your brand aesthetic? We can help create a one-time Instagram mood board and do all of this for you! We’ll let you know which colors to look for within your content, and share an example Instagram feed for you to use as inspiration.

Once you’ve determined your color palette, define your content categories! If you’re a wedding photographer, how many people shots vs. decor shots do you want to share? If you’re a wellness pro, can you break up your content into nutrition tips, recipes, and motivation?

Break down your content into 2-7 categories. These categories can be broad - There’s no need to have more than 7! For our Be Inspired PR Instagram feed, we share motivational quotes, shots from our in-house produced photoshoots and events, and client press. By defining the types of content you’ll share on social media, you can develop a schedule, which we’re covering next in this blog post!

Use A Repetitive Schedule

Now that you’ve defined what your feed will look like and what you’ll post, it’s time to put together a schedule. Depending on the number of content categories you have, you might post in each of your categories once per week or every other day. It’s all about finding a schedule that works for you!

For example, if one of your content categories is motivational quotes, try posting those every Monday. They’ll show up consistently in your feed, and that checks off one day a week where you don’t have to worry about what to post.

The goal here is to avoid grouping all of your similar content together on your feed. You want a potential client to go to your Instagram page and immediately know what you do and how you do it.

If you’ve only got one type of content to share, try alternating image styles. For example, post a people shot, a decor shot, a people shot, etc. That way, your feed will feel balanced at first glance. A balanced feed will attract more followers than a chaotic one!

Utilize Content Creation

Some service-based or lifestyle brands may not have enough content to plan out their social media feeds. If that sounds like you, it might be time to invest in content creation! A custom content creation shoot will result in a bevy of images for you to use on social media. From product shots to action shots of you doin’ your thing, you’ll get more than enough content to build a successful content calendar.

If you’re not sure how to plan a content creation shoot, a PR firm can help! We’ve outlined the benefits of a content creation shoot on our blog before.
