3 Things We Look For In Submission-Worthy Weddings

If you work in the wedding industry, chances are you’d love to see your work published on a major press outlet! While every wedding is beautiful in its own unique way (it is a celebration of love, after all!), getting featured isn’t always guaranteed. With over 14 years of experience pitching and submitting weddings for our wedding PR clients, we’ve narrowed down a few things that separate a beautiful wedding from a submission-worthy one. Today on our PR blog, we’re sharing 3 things we look for in a wedding that’s bound for a top-tier real wedding feature!

1) Detail photos - Lots of them!

First and foremost, a submission-worthy wedding gallery has lots (and lots) of detail photos. That includes photos of the stationery, the flowers, the fashion, the table settings, the bar, etc. From the publication’s perspective, their goal in featuring a wedding is to inspire their readers. Detail photos are almost always the best way to do that! Good detail photos allow a reader to save and be inspired by ideas that they can use for their own wedding.

If a strong feature is your goal, as a wedding planner we always recommend communicating this need to your photographer. If you’re a photographer, make sure you’re getting as many detail photos as you can throughout the wedding day! Those extra shots can make all of the difference when it comes to getting published.

2) A good story.

Next up, the best wedding submissions always have a good story to go along with them. Think something that YOU would want to read on a wedding blog! Every wedding has a good story, it’s just up to you (or your wedding PR team) to find it and tell it well. When looking for a story to tell along with your wedding submission, start with the couple! How did they meet? How did they get engaged? Were there any hiccups in the wedding planning process?

From there, start digging into the details of the day. Did they include any personalized details that made their wedding day unique? Were there any fun traditions they followed (or started)? Get creative here! If a wedding editor falls in love with the story you tell, the chances of them picking up the wedding for a full feature go up significantly.

3) Something totally unique.

Lastly, the most submission-worthy weddings have something that make them totally unique. Most outlets tend to stay away from publishing things they’ve already seen before. You can have the most beautiful wedding photos with the best story, but if it’s too similar to something they’ve already published, you might be turned down for a full feature. This is by far the toughest thing to do. Weddings are all about traditions, after all!

As a wedding vendor, we always recommend trying to do something just a little different each time (within reason, of course). Try a new napkin fold! Encourage your clients to do something fun for their escort card display! Use a new color palette you haven’t seen before! These extra steps to make each wedding unique will ensure that you have a submission-worthy wedding every time.

So there you have it - The 3 things we look for in submission-worthy weddings! Was this helpful as you work on submitting more of your work? We hope so!
